about me

March 07, 2016

I am a multi-medium artist focusing on landscapes as well as more abstract compositions. I paint in watercolor, acrylic, oil, and do scratch board art. My painting subjects vary from animals, cityscapes and prairies, to abstract compositions. I’ve enjoyed painting with watercolor on Yupo paper, a synthetic paper where the paint evaporates instead of absorbing into the paper.

When painting on Yupo, directing and harnessing color as it slides around on the plasticized paper often ends with a “happy and surprising mistake” that offers interest and sometimes mystery to the painting.

education / training:

  • Watercolor classes, Como Park Conservatory, St. Paul, Minnesota

  • Mentored workshop from Howard Sivertson at the Grand Marais Colony. Grand Marais, Minnesota

  • Watercolor workshop, Maple Grove Art Center, Minnesota

  • Monoprint workshop by Michael Coffey, Pagosa Springs, Colorado

  • I have been a self-taught artist since 2002 working in watercolor and acrylic medium.

participation in shows & exhibits

With the encouragement of my artist friend and mentor, Karlyn Eckman, I have exhibited my work in open studio events and art shows as a guest artist since 2005 in St. Paul, Minnesota. These include:

  • 2402 Arts Coop (formerly the Chittenden and Eastman Building Arts Cooperative), Saint Paul, Minnesota, 2005-2010

  • Artblok Arts Coop, 2010 East Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, annually from 2011 to 2016.

I have been active in annual plein air painting trips in Grand Marais, Two Harbors, and the Winona area in Minnesota.

I am also a member of a life drawing coop at the California Building in Minneapolis.

artist’s statement

I would call myself an art student who is evolving. Art has made me a life-long learner who enjoys exploring new techniques, subjects, and inspirations. Often times my paintings veer off from my intended plan and take on a life of their own with some surprising and satisfying results. Painting is a form of meditation for me and form of self-expression.
